Finding the best barbecue in Venice is a little like ordering a fish taco in Kansas; you are never quite sure what you are going to get. We mapped the entire stretch from the chaotic sand at Windward Avenue to the quieter canals, and the results are gloriously deranged.

Data from our visits shows a total disconnect between what is advertised and what we actually craved, flipping between a flawless, made-to-order drink program and a pop-up requiring sunblock and a two-hour minimum. The range runs from an Indonesian street-food tasting to impossibly tender brisket hiding inside a lounge, with a pitmaster’s smoked duck mixed in for good measure.

So if you want to avoid a sticky sauce incident or a very expensive fried pickle, start here.

Great burger and fries
Nice happy hour drinks
Delicious, filling chicken tacos

Beach and Brew Venice sits close enough to the sand that you can hear the waves between bites, which is a nice trick for a BBQ joint. The burger and fries are exactly what you want after a morning of salt air and sunburn, straightforward and satisfying. Their happy hour drinks arrive with a heavy pour, and the chicken tacos are surprisingly hefty, stuffed with juicy meat and a bright slaw. It is not the most adventurous barbecue in town, but it is consistent. You could do worse than a cold beer, a decent patty, and the ocean breeze. A solid, unpretentious stop, though I would skip the ribs if they ever offer them dry. Fine place, honestly.

Fish tacos lived up

Fast, friendly customer service

Clutch is where I found the fish tacos I did not know I was chasing. They are grilled, not fried, which keeps the fish flaky and clean, and the cabbage crunch cuts through the richness. The homemade horchata is the real star, though, creamy and cinnamon-dusted, a perfect counter to the smoky char. Their drinks are generously measured, which helps, and the service is fast without feeling rushed. The staff actually remembered my order on a second visit, which is a small miracle in a busy spot. It is not a traditional barbecue joint, but the coastal twist works. I left full and content, and that is the highest praise I can give.

Simpang Venice surprised me entirely. I walked in expecting a conventional BBQ spot and instead found an Indonesian street food adventure laid out across eleven courses, and the highlight was an eight-course tasting that felt like a culinary tour. The flavors are bold, with lemongrass and chilies dancing around every protein, and everything arrives quick and hot. The staff are friendly and fast, genuinely enthusiastic about explaining the sambal levels. The interior is cozy, almost like a friend's living room, and the consistency is remarkable; my second visit matched the first. If you want something beyond smoked ribs and brisket, this is a detour worth taking. I only wish they had a bigger patio.

Smoke Queen Barbecue has that warm, convivial feel that makes you want to stay long after the plates clear. The brisket and pork bowls are tender, almost falling apart at the touch of a fork, and the staff is genuinely helpful when you are indecisive about sides. I appreciated that they let me build my own two-meat combo, and they even threw in extra brisket without charging me. The sauces are a mixed bag, though; the sweet molasses one dominates, and I found it cloying after a few bites. You may want to ask for the tangier vinegar sauce instead. It is a neighborhood spot with heart, and the chill vibe makes up for the sauce overreach. I left satisfied, if slightly sticky.

Market is a different beast altogether, more of a refined, share-plates kind of place that happens to have a grill. The dishes are smaller, but each one is a tiny composition, and the flavors are layered in a way that feels intentional. The house pasta, a short rib ragù over pappardelle, is rich and worth the splurge, while the coconut sorbet at the end is a palate cleanser that tastes like a vacation. The atmosphere is lively, with ample outdoor seating that catches the evening breeze, and the presentation is beautiful without being fussy. It is not cheap, and you will need three plates to feel full, but for a special occasion, it delivers. Not your classic BBQ, but excellent cooking.

Cafe Gratitude, despite its name, is not a vegan-only spot, though they handle those options well. The chik’n and waffles is a guilty pleasure, crispy and sweet, and the steak and eggs sandwich is a hearty brunch affair that could feed two. The side salad is actually refreshing, not an afterthought, with a light vinaigrette. Service is attentive, with servers checking in just often enough without being annoying. The vibe is clean and bright, a bit modern for a BBQ joint, but the friendly staff makes it feel approachable. It is a reliable lunch spot, though the portions are moderate. I would not come for the smoke, but I would come back for the waffles.

Baby Blues BBQ is the classic you expect when you think of this genre, and they nail the essentials. The sauces are the highlight, a lineup of four different styles, and each one earns its place on the table, from the classic sweet to a fiery habanero that lingers. The outdoor seating is nice, especially on a cool evening, and the staff is quick and lovely, even when the line gets long. The collard greens are the side to order, smoky and tender, and I practically licked the bowl. This is the best straightforward BBQ spot on the list, and the consistency is dependable. No gimmicks, just quality meat and honest sides. I will be back for the pulled pork.

APL BBQ Pop Up is a review in two parts: the food and the wait. The meat is smoky and tender, with a bark that crunches just so, and the peking duck with blackberry sauce is an unexpected triumph, the sweet fruit cutting through the rich fat. The pork belly melts on the tongue, leaving a smear of pure flavor. That said, this is a weekend-only pop-up with a line that snakes down the block, and you will wait at least an hour. It is worth it if you have the patience, and the early bird gets the shorter queue. The staff is efficient, moving through orders with military precision. For true BBQ aficionados, this is the pilgrimage. Just pack sunscreen.

Wangs N Thangs is an unassuming counter-service spot that delivers big on taste. The wings are the reason to come, crispy and coated in a sticky glaze that makes your fingers shine, and the salmon burger is a juicy, flaky surprise that I did not expect from a place named after chicken appendages. They offer free samples of their sauces, which is smart, because you will want to buy a bottle of the garlic buffalo. The service is kind and passionate, with staff who genuinely love talking about their smoking process. Mixed lemonade is a bright, tart complement to the grease. It is small, so expect a crowd, but the line moves fast. A hidden worthy stop.

Worth the early line

Lucky Mediterranean Grills is an odd entry on a BBQ list, but it earns its place through sheer generosity. The portions are enormous, enough for two meals, and the kebab platter is a study in smoky char and juicy meat. The Turkish bread is warm and pillowy, perfect for sopping up the garlic yogurt. The sauces are clearly a point of pride, and the staff will rattle off their origins if you ask; the chili oil is my recommendation. The kofte sandwich is a handheld delight, and the baklava at the end is flaky, honeyed, and satisfyingly sticky. It is not Texas-style, but for a beachside twist, it is refreshing. Bring your appetite and maybe a container.

American Beauty leans more bar than pit, but do not let that fool you. The outdoor patio is prime for people-watching, with that lively hum that makes you feel like you are part of something. Their seasonal sides change often, but I lucked into a charred jalapeño corn that I still think about. The grilled prawns are fantastic, shells blistered and seasoned with a smoky heat, while the steakhouse burger hits hard, a thick patty with a crusty sear. The space is spacious enough that you are not elbowing strangers, even on a weekend. It is more polished than the average BBQ shack, but the quality holds. Just bring cash or an open mind about the menu prices.

The Venice Beach Bar & Kitchen is the kind of place where you order lunch in your swimsuit and no one blinks. It is close enough to the beach that sand in your sandals feels like part of the dress code. The Impossible burger options are a thoughtful nod to plant-based eaters, and mine was satisfyingly messy. The fries are solid, salty, and crunchy, and the service is attentive without hovering. However, the portions are on the smaller side for the price, which stings a little given the casual vibe. You are paying for the location, not the volume. Still, if you want a quick, decent bite with an ocean view, this works. Just manage expectations.
